Today was my fourth day working at my clinical site –> The CBU athletic training room. It has been a good experience so far. I have re-learned to tape ankles, arches, make gatorade (not as easy as you think), and do laundry (who I am kidding I’ve been doing my own laundry for 4 years). I have been working with the women’s volleyball team and today the coach gave me a free t-shirt, or a $19,400 t-shirt depending on how you look at it.
Last week tragedy struck at CBU. The cross country team was driving into the mountains for a team building retreat/high altitude training weekend and one of the vans was broadsided on the 395, after an out of control SUV had flipped, burst into flames, and jumped over the concrete median colliding with the CBU van. 6 people ended up losing their lives, including the CBU cheer coach who was killed on impact. Say a prayer for her husband and her little kids. Also say a prayer several of the CBU cross country athletes who are still in critical condition in Reno, Nevada.
Today as my shift was ending I was called over to help Michelle (our head ATC) as she was removing stitches from the scalp, forehead and eyebrow of one of the cross country runners who was in the crash. I was able to assist her in removing the stitches with relative ease, even though the runner’s parents were in the corner wringing their hands and fighting nausea. Tomorrow we are off the Azusa Pacific for our first volleyball game of the year. I am looking forward to it. The only thing better than beating your rival, is beating them on their home court.
Today as I was working with Michelle she told me that it takes 10,000 hours to be great at something. I have been working in an athletic training room for 22 hours now, meaning that I only need 9,978 hours to become great at it. I have been working hard every day so that one day I can be a great athletic trainer.
On to the next one….The “experts” say that Carmelo Anthony is not going to remain with the Nuggets. That would make me sad if he left. Whatever team he goes to (if he goes) will probably be my new favorite team. With one exception. If for some awful, God-forsaken, impossible reason he goes to the Lakers I will cheer for him to do well, but I cannot in a clear conscience cheer for the Lakers. Larry Fitzgerald sprained his MCL on saturday night. Thankfully it was just a sprain and he will play in the regular season opener. Had he torn it, I would have cried and boycotted football season for at least the first 6 weeks. (FYI. a sprain happens only to ligaments, and a strain happens only to muscles and tendons. Be careful or you will be corrected, as I was last week..lol). Additionally, Larry Fitzgerald is the best receiver in the game and he will have a better season than Andre Johnson. You heard it here first. Last bit of sporting news, Brett Favre will return in time the play the last pre-season game. Trust me.
I have been reading The Journey of Desire, by John Eldredge and it has been very eye opening. A portion of the book that stuck out to me today was Eldredge’s commentary of the prodigal son found in Luke 15. He is describing a Rembrandt painting of the story of the prodigal son and “In the painting, the elder brother stands a step above the reunion of father and son. He will not step down, enter in. He is above it all. But who receives redemption? The scandalous message of the story is this: those who kill desire – the legalists, the dutiful – are not the ones who experience the father’s embrace. The question is not, dare we desire, but dare we not desire?”
