DYI: Looking Glass Wine Bottles

this is the first year that we are going to be spending christmas in our own place.
up until this year we have been able to get back to the midwest to be with family.
most of those years we get the blessing of being able to leave for a few weeks as well,
so decorating has never been a big deal.
the most i have done is make paper chains to countdown until the day we fly home!
this year with hubs schedule & work,
we will be spending christmas in our own little apartment.
i have started decorating,
but also have had to do it on a penny budget.
i saw the "looking glass" wine bottles on pinterest a few times
& decided they would be easy & cheap for the mantle!
((yes, we have a gorgeous brick fireplace circa 1988))
my mama, hubs & friend matt supplied the empty wine bottles.
the little other bottles are olives, pasta sauce & random glass jars i had lying around.
i went on a mission to Michael's to get the "looking glass" spray paint.
50% off coupon in hand.
but to my despair they do not sell such spray paint.
i then ventured to three other stores that sold spray paint
& with no success,
as well as no employees ever seeing such a paint,
i returned to Michael's to use my coupon on metallic silver.
not exactly the same,
but fit the same color concept for the mantle.
gold & silver & red.

i checked the weather forecast
& planned to do the whole project on an afternoon that had no rain.
i was very lucky to have a few days to choose from
& got the project done quite quickly.
the longest part was removing the labels on the jars.
thanks to google & friends i was able to find a fast method.
soak the jars in soapy water.
use a butter knife to remove labels.
& oil to take off any extra glue sticky.
grabbed a cardboard box,
rubber glove
& headed out to the porch.
i coated the glass with three thin layers
& ta-da!

i love them.
i love that they were free,
outside of the spray pain.
i love that i can add to the collection throughout the month.
i love how they are going to look on the completed mantle!

woohoo.
yeah, for DYIs & actually doing them.

XO.
what kind of christmas decorations have you made?

Ooo, love. Yesterday I clipped some pine branches from the yard and arranged them inside. Tempted to clip a few dead branches from the maples and spray paint them gold?

love this idea! i did this with wine/beer bottles last year to use as candlesticks on my dining table! I'm sorry you won't get to be with family on christmas day, but i'm sure it will be a really special one for you and scottie : )
